About Ray Gun: Ray Gun magazine is remembered for the radical design approach taken by art director David Carson. Every issue broke new ground by experimenting with unorthodox layouts, deconstructed typography and abstract imagery. Bodies of text were inverted, reflected, dissected and scattered; photos and images were deliberately blurred or cropped or made obscure in other way. Ray Gun properly trashed the existing conventions of magazine design and in so doing, positioned itself firmly at the vanguard of those defining the visual style of the 90s. It's nearly 25 years since the final issue wa s published, however Ray Gun's influence is still clearly visible in all manner of contemporary publishing, media and visual communication. If you've never seen it before, a quick flick through Ray Gun will be enough to convince you that it's one of the coolest magazines ever published. Condition of this copy: This magazine is listed as in 'acceptable' condition, since that lies at the bottom of ebay's list of item conditions, however, I'll upfront say that it's actually in pretty poor condition. Here's why: Firstly, both front and back covers show signs of significant wear and (literally) tear. The spine has stress creases and is very worn to the point of splitting, both front and back covers have multiple creases, scuffs and marks, and the back cover has a 2cm tear halfway down the outside edge. The cover is roughly 3/4 detached from the magazine's binding. Also, there's some water damage. The left hand side of the magazine (from the spine to approximately 8cm in) has taken water on board at some point. All pages including the front and back cover have some moderate wrinkling. There's no sign of mould however and all the internal pages (i.e. all except the cover) appear to remain bound securely. Lastly, someone has cut out an approximately 17cm x 17cm picture from the Michael Stipe On The Road feature, and in doing so, has taken out a hefty chunk of the Tar and Jawbox article on the page behind, and has left cuts on the page following. Annoying! Never lend anyone your magazines, ever. Ever. Mutilated T+J story aside, this magazine is still perfectly readable (or at least as readable as any Ray Gun issue can be said to be, given its adventures in typography). I'm listing it just in case anyone's after this issue specifically and is prepared to accept a few battle scars to get it for waaay less than the price of a pristine copy kept untouched by human hand in someone's home cryogenic chamber for 30 years. (See pics to bear witness to the condition of this magazine). Other mags available: I've decided to part with to my sizeable collection of magazines, so please do check my page periodically as I'll be posting listings for other issues of Ray Gun, plus copies of THE FACE, Arena, Arena Homme Plus, Dazed, i-D and whatever else I can find, all eagerly purchased by me at the time of publication (long, long ago...).
